Jun Kaneko was born in Nagoya, Japan in 1942. He studied painting with Satoshi Ogawa during his adolescence. He came to the United States in 1963 to continue his studies at Chouinard Institute of Art when his introduction to Fred Marer drew him to sculptural ceramics. He proceeded to study with Peter Voulkos, Paul Soldner, and Jerry Rothman in California during the time now defined as The Contemporary Ceramics Movement in America. The following decade, Kaneko taught at some of the nation’s leading art schools, including Scripps College, Rhode Island School of Design and Cranbrook Academy of Art. Kaneko approached The Fabric Workshop and Museum in 2004 to work collaboratively with him on a new project: the original fabric components for a traveling production of Madame Butterfly that he was creating for Opera Omaha. Kaneko incorporated his signature mark-making (the strokes and hand-painted polka dots into the fabric produced by FWM.
Made from two layers of a tight weave 100% cotton.
- Size info and photos here. Masks will shrink a bit in the first wash.
- Please wash and dry masks before using, and wash and dry, or thoroughly steam iron them between uses. Print will fade with repeated washing. We recommend washing masks in a mesh bag as you would wash delicates, or hand wash and hang to dry to prolong the lifespan as the elastic straps can get caught in washing machines.
- Masks have a wire nose bridge which helps keep the top part of the mask snug to the nose. Adjust this by gently bending the wire to fit your face/nose.
